Cryotherapy was first developed in Japan in 1978 to treat rheumatoid arthritis and has been in use and studied much since that time. It has now become a proven method for activating the body's natural healing processes. Other documented successes of cryotherapy include promoting weight loss, decreasing injury recovery time, exhilarating mood, and slowing down the aging process. The procedure is fast, painless, and clean. Cryotherapy is essentially the exposure of the body to very low temperatures in a short period of time. The process is actually very simple. Upon stepping into a specially designed chamber, you are sprayed with a dry Nitrogen mist that chills the skin. Your skin temperature is only lowered for a few minutes yet the results can be dramatic. This drastic drop in skin temperature activates the body's immune response helping to relieve inflammation and pain. Obviously, one of the greatest benefits of Cryotherapy is how quick and painless the entire process is as three minutes is all it takes. Come in today to 202° Below and experience the rejuvenating effects of Cryotherapy.

Who shouldn't do cryotherapy?

I shouldn't do Cryotherapy if...
The following conditions are contraindications to whole body cryotherapy: Pregnancy, severe Hypertension (BP> 180/100), acute or recent myocardial infarction, unstable angina pectoris, arrhythmia, symptomatic cardiovascular disease, cardiac pacemaker, peripheral arterial occlusive disease, venous thrombosis, acute or recent cerebrovascular accident, uncontrolled seizures, Raynaud’s Syndrome, fever, tumor disease, symptomatic lung disorders, bleeding disorders, severe anemia, infection, claustrophobia, cold allergy, age less than 14 years (parental consent to treatment needed), acute kidney and urinary tract diseases.

Let's get technical…What exactly happens to my body?

The outer layer of skin temperature is lowered so dramatically and quickly that capillaries and blood vessels undergo vasoconstriction, immediately followed by vasodilation. This causes the body to release toxins and feel good endorphins. The skins exposure to extreme cold also causes the body to increase its metabolic rate, burning up to 800 calories. Some additional benefits include; pain relief from chronic medical conditions, increased circulation, treatment of mood disorders such as anxiety and depression, clearing of skin conditions, reduction of the appearance of cellulite, tighter and more youthful looking skin, and stronger hair and nails.

Cryotherapy clearly helps with many physical ailments, but are there any psychological benefits?

Yes, people who suffer from anxiety and depression receive hormonal benefits with Cryotherapy. Patients who used this treatment reported that over 3 weeks they saw their depression decrease by 50%. One session helps them to feel more relaxed and an improvement in their mood. The decrease in depression and anxiety lasts a long time and with multiple sessions it lasts even longer. Cryotherapy also helps with insomnia as it improves your ability to fall into a deeper sleep once relaxed.

Pain Management

Cryotherapy reduces pain and inflammation, alleviates stress / depression, boosts immune system and improves sleep. Chronic inflammation throughout the body can cause the onset of many diseases including cancer, arthritis, heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer’s. Using Cryotherapy helps to reduce this inflammation dramatically and in some cases almost entirely so that you can keep your body healthy and pain free. With a 2O2° localized Cryotherapy treatment we can target specific areas you may have pain whether due to arthritis or a post operative procedure to help maximize pain relief and flexibility.

Health and Beauty

Cryotherapy can enhance collagen production in skin, reduce cellulite, improve skin conditions and burn calories. Cryotherapy treatment enhances collagen in skin to prevent aging, leaving you with youthful, radiant skin. With a 2O2° Facial we can target specific areas such as wrinkles, dark spots, and acne to enhance your natural beauty.

Cryotherapy also helps to reduce the appearance of cellulite by producing new collagen that causes your skin to become firm and smooth. Cryotherapy is a good replacement for Botox as it is non-invasive and natural.

Exposing your outer layer of skin to extreme cold temperatures forces the body to speed up to warm itself. This increases your metabolism and starts to burn up calories as you work to return to your normal body temperature and can burn 500-800 calories in just one session.

Athletic Performance and Recovery

Cryotherapy decreases inflammation by eliciting your bodies natural anti-inflammatory response which speeds recovery time, increases athletic performance, and reduces delayed onset muscle soreness.

For only 3 minutes in our Cryosauna, the outer layers of your skin get exposed to cold temperatures and your blood rushes to the muscles and joints as it tries to keep the body warm. This refreshed blood flow will help you to feel reduced soreness and pain as well as rapid healing in the injured area. Cryotherapy is also great for post-surgery as it helps you get back to full mobility quickly.

Along with increased energy a faster metabolism can also help to build lean muscle tissue to reduce body fat and weight. The Cryosauna uses a nitrogen mist to lower your skin surface temperature by 30-50 degrees Fahrenheit over a period of two-three minutes. The Cryosauna is cooled using liquid nitrogen but clients are not in direct contact with the gas. The skin reacts to the cold and sends messages to the brain that acts as a stimulant to the regulatory functions of the body. It produces the scanning of all areas that may not be working to their fullest potential. The skin exposure to the extreme temperatures also triggers the release of anti-inflammatory molecules and endorphins.

This modality was first utilized in Japan in 1978 to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Studies conducted over the last two decades in Europe have established Whole Body Cryotherapy as a powerful modality for inflammation reduction and injuries. Professional athletes have discovered Whole Body Cryotherapy as a powerful treatment to decrease recovery time and increase athletic performance. Although Whole Body Cryotherapy originated in Japan, it was a group of Polish scientists who took the idea and made Whole Body Cryotherapy the physical therapy it is today. The Olympic rehabilitation center in Spala, Poland opened in May 2000 and has been used as a training and injury rehabilitation center for many athletes since then.

202° Facial

A 2O2° Facial treatment involves the application of nitrogen gas at -35° F to the face, scalp, neck, and chest. This procedure can be especially beneficial in reducing pore size, decreasing wrinkles and lines, improving blood circulation to the skin in the face, brightening dark spots, and diminishing acne and skin problem areas. Application of nitrogen gas to the face during a 2O2° Facial treatment will effectively break down the toxins present in the subcutaneal tissue beneath the skin’s surface of the face resulting in a more clear, youthful facial complexion.

A 2O2° Facial combines the healing benefits of cold therapy while promoting your natural ability to heal and renew the skin without any chemicals. Sub-zero cooled air mists over the face, telling the body to warm and nourish the area with oxygen rich blood. Fine lines and wrinkles are minimized over time as collagen production is stimulated and the youthful skin you once enjoyed becomes more visible. In less than 15 minutes, you will enjoy a truly “lunch-time” facial experience that will rejuvenate your skin and leave you refreshed and energized.

Local Treatment

Local Cryotherapy applications are used to reduce pain, inflammation, and swelling in targeted areas. Unlike Whole Body Cryotherapy, which stimulates cold receptors all over the body in order to trigger an internal systemic anti-inflammatory response, local cryotherapy is comparable to "icing", although much more powerful and efficient based on our experience. Clients frequently combine this application with Whole Body Cryotherapy, to treat problem areas both from the "inside out" as well as from the "outside in".

The Local Cryotherapy device is an excellent tool for treating specific areas of the body that are over worked, over used, worn out, and are inflamed. Cryotherapy combats this response by constricting the blood vessels, thus decreasing inflammation. Whether pain or inflammation is keeping you from your favorite activity or hobby such as sports, biking, running or gardening, or if you are simply finding yourself less active and more irritable due to chronic debilitating pain and inflammation, then Local Cryotherapy is your answer.
